PorchLight Offers a Path from Homelessness to Stability

In the shadows of prosperity on the Eastside, where skyrocketing housing costs and life’s unexpected challenges can leave many without a safety net, PorchLight stands as a source of hope and opportunity. As the only dedicated shelter for single adult men in the region, PorchLight offers more than a temporary bed, it gives clients a pathway to lasting stability and renewed dignity. For men navigating the uncertainty of job loss, mental health struggles, or substance use, PorchLight represents a lifeline, helping them transition from homelessness to a better sustainable future.
PorchLight’s impact is undeniable. In the last year, 98% of the men they housed remained in stable living situations or transitioned to permanent residency. PorchLight’s model blends emergency shelter services with long-term housing solutions, addressing some of the contributing factors of homelessness rather than simply offering a quick fix. Their primary shelter, which accommodates up to 125 men at a time, provides essential services, while their rotating shelters, hosted by local faith-based congregations, extend their reach throughout the community.
“A third of men who entered with no housing, left with stable housing. That’s a success.”
According to Troy Christensen, who became Executive Director in 2023, PorchLight offers more than just a bed for the night and focuses on long-term solutions that rebuild lives. “We have a full behavioral health team, which includes social workers, counselors, substance use disorder specialists, nurse, and an ARNP, or prescribing nurse. And then we also offer case management assistance with finding jobs and assistance with finding housing.”
From Humble Beginnings to Comprehensive Services
Founded in 1993, PorchLight’s beginnings were humble, limited shelter capabilities serving only a handful of men. But as the Eastside grew, so did PorchLight’s mission. In 2023, they moved into a new permanent facility, expanding their ability to provide shelter and improving the comprehensive services that address a spectrum of support. Men staying in their permanent shelter have access to sleeping accommodations, regular meals, showers and laundry, storage and mail services, haircuts, and computer access.
When a new client arrives, the journey toward stability begins with a personalized plan. Each man is paired with a case manager who conducts a thorough assessment, identifying needs ranging from employment support to behavioral health services and access to medical care. For many, this personalized care is the first step toward reclaiming their independence.
For those ready to take the next step, PorchLight has a permanent housing program that currently offers 80 affordable units and where rent is tailored to income. Housing is available with rent set at one-third of their income, no matter how low, even if it is zero. On average, 50% of the men living in these units are employed. “If you qualify, you can get [permanent] housing and only have to pay one third of your income for rent,” explained Christensen. “And if you want to move on, you can, but it’s not required.”
PorchLight provides shelter and services for up to 1,500 men each year. More than 76,000 meals are served, 43,000 bed nights, and 2,700 direct client hours. Their commitment to long-term success is clear: once housed, the majority of their clients maintain their stability.
But the impact is about more than just numbers, it’s seen in the lives transformed and futures reclaimed. “A third of men who entered with no housing, left with stable housing. That’s a success,” said Christensen.
One challenge that PorchLight faces is what Christensen describes as certain perception about men with regard to self-reliance. He decried the belief that “…men should just ‘buck up’ and take care of themselves…” as well as take central responsibility for caring for others. That perspective makes it harder for men to ask for help and harder for the community to step up and provide services and funding. Despite this challenge, PorchLight remains steadfast in its values of love, acceptance, and dignity. They are more than just a shelter, they are a vital force ensuring that no one is left behind. As housing challenges persist, supporting organizations like PorchLight are essential to building a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
A Call to Action: Building a Stronger Community
As housing challenges persist and the cost of living continues to rise, organizations like PorchLight are more critical than ever. Their work is only possible through the generosity of the community—support that ensures they can continue offering life-changing services to men who have nowhere else to turn.
PorchLight isn’t just about sheltering men, it’s about transforming lives. Their mission is to create a future where every individual, regardless of their circumstances, can build a stable, hopeful life. And with continued community support, they’re making that future possible, one life at a time.
