People and Culture Make a Great City

Bellevue is where we are, Community is who we are.

A great city is not just tall buildings. It is the people and culture—the community—that makes a great city.

Bellevue is a great city. Yes, we do have tall buildings, wonderful neighborhoods, and impressive schools. We have effective government and a growing economy. But most importantly, we have a population that is open, welcoming, and connected. Residents that are more focused on harmony rather than drama, and problem solving rather than politics.

The city is not immune to the complexities of growth or modern society. But we have a history of addressing issues head-on and finding opportunities for community building.

How do we stay prosperous and sustain the Bellevue way of life?

See Beyond Factions
Businesses. Neighborhoods. Government. Residents. These are all just different words for the same thing—the people of Bellevue. Our friends and neighbors. If we see and listen to people and not factions, we will be ok. So next time you are tempted to think of political or economic blocs, think about neighborhood blocks instead and how we’re all part of a larger community.

Increase Community Engagement
Get more people, more involved. Bellevue is a busy place full of busy people. We need to carve out time to get engaged. Everyone should have a voice. Come to community gatherings, attend local government meetings, volunteer at local nonprofits, or start your own community outreach. Don’t just live or work in the community, be the community.

Grow Community Investment
Yep, put our money where our mouth is. Time and money are still the currency of change and drive action. We need greater investment in the social infrastructure. We need well-funded initiatives that enrich our community. Taxes and government spending won’t fill all the gaps. Support for nonprofit organizations and community projects is crucial as well, especially in economically challenging times.

Show Your Heart
How do we care for those less fortunate? The true test of a community is if we leave anyone behind. Bellevue is a prosperous city but not everyone directly benefits. We need to make sure nobody falls through the cracks. That takes public and private efforts to reach out and care for others when they need help. Compassion and empathy fuel the soul of a strong and stable community.
